Earlier today, a possible closure of the Star City Birmingham casino of the Genting Group UK division has been reported. Then, the information was officially confirmed by the brand.
Genting Casinos UK, which is the second largest casino operator on the territory of the country as well as part of Genting International, approached The iGaming Post, confirming its intentions to consider a possible closure of the Star City Birmingham. The latter was once the brand’s flagship casino in the region. The company’s decision came after the revenues generated by the venue have seriously declined, amid the establishment of their Resorts World situated at the Birmingham International Airport.
According to preliminary media reports, the staff of the Star City Birmingham casino were informed about the company’s decision in the middle of the week. The closure was first reported to be due in January next year.
The PR company of Genting Casinos UK said in an official statement that the brand was constantly reviewing its business in order to make sure it was able to provide its customers with the best possible facilities. The company also confirmed that the consultations for relocation of its support staff from the Liverpool offices to Birmingham started earlier this week.
Genting Casinos UK confessed that its Star City casino venue in Birmingham was one of the major issues that have been recently discussed, so its future was yet to be decided. The brand shared that the gaming hub had been overshadowed by the above-mentioned Resorts World venue, as the latter provided some of the best gaming and leisure facilities on a global scale. Genting’s Resorts World currently offers an international casino, shopping centre and hotel to its customers.
The company shared it had started consultations with its staff, so a final decision on the matter could be expected in the near future. Genting also described its staff as one of the major priorities of the brand, which could offer them a number of opportunities in other facilities in the region.
The latest leisure resort of Genting Casinos UK – Resorts World – was officially established in October 2015 at the Birmingham International Airport. The project was estimated to £150 million. At the time when the resort was opened, the President of the UK brand of the company Peter Brooks said he was very cautious about the project’s development, calling it an experiment.
On the other hand, the Star City casino venue was established in 2003 and has long been the largest casino on the territory of the UK, and a flagship venue of the Genting brand in the country.
